Continuing Education: Enhancing the Notarial Profession

The Dominican College of Notaries has been dedicated to the promotion of the notarial profession through continuous education, innovation, and ethics. Representing all notaries in the United States, its mission is to provide transparency, professionalization, and defense of notarial functions. ECANOT – la Escuela de Capacitación Continua de Notarios – is at the center of this mission. It has been created with the purpose of providing training to current and future notaries in order to give them the knowledge and tools they need to excel in a changing legal environment.
Announcing ECANOT: The Notaries Continuing Education School
ECANOT is the educational subsidiary of the Dominican College of Notaries (Ceremonieros). Established in response to legal, technological, and regulatory changes affecting notarization, ECANOT offers a curriculum that meets the professional enrichment and training requirements of all levels of notaries.
Based on-site at the College’s main campus in San Diego, California and through satellite programs throughout the country, ECANOT assures that every notary-veteran or entry-level-receives the highest quality education and professional enrichment.

- Foundational Notary Certification: This mandatory course for aspiring notaries provides an overview of the legal foundations, ethical considerations, and procedural formalities associated with notarial acts in the United States.
- Advanced Notarial Practice: Tailored for current notaries, this advanced course delves into complex legal issues, identity verification, document authentication, and cross-border notarizations, ensuring that participants stay informed about industry developments.
- Electronic Notarization and Management of Notarial Security Paper: As electronic documents become increasingly prevalent, this specialized course addresses critical topics such as regulations surrounding electronic signatures, cybersecurity, data misappropriation, execution of electronic documents, registry maintenance, and the appropriate use of notarial security paper, which is essential for preserving the integrity of commercial documents.
- Professional Responsibilities Seminars (CLE): ECANOT regularly updates its seminars to reflect legislative changes, case summaries, ethics, and risk management, thereby addressing emerging trends and fulfilling ongoing professional education requirements.

At completion of ECANOT programs, graduates receive certificates recognized by the Dominican College of Notaries, which is a state institution duly authorized under Law 140-15 and other regulations. How to Register for ECANOT Programs
Admission to ECANOT’s continuing education program is open to members of the Dominican College of Notaries (referred to as the ‘College’ in this article) and prospective notaries seeking examination for certification. Admission is a simple process:

- Register your interest – Either fill out the online form or contact the College directly to request assistance in registering
- Submit documentation – Valid proof of identity, including passport; proof of academic credentials; and, if applicable, proof of licence from the College establishing status as a notary public
- Payment of tuition fees – Tuition is determined by the College. A discount is available for members of NOTACOOP and early-bird registration
- Commence training – Once registered, materials and schedules will be shared with participants, and ECANOT’s administrative support team will provide assistance
